Recently, the Year Five and Six students have been exploring many topics and concepts across the learning areas. The students also enjoyed perusing a wide selection of books at our Book Fair event. The school also bought a number of these books, which will be available to borrow from our library.
In Japanese, the students recently enjoyed creating and using Vokis using the ‘about me’ language learnt this term. This consolidated their Japanese language skills, which they then shared with peers.
This term, in Mathematics, the students have focused on selecting appropriate strategies for multiplication and division. They are learning to apply inverse operations, and multiplication facts, to solve division problems and vice versa. The terms factor, product, quotient, dividend, divisor and remainder were also taught in context. In addition, the students have been focusing on angles and three-dimensional objects. They looked at types of angles, vertically opposite angles and adjacent angles, as well as the straight angle, the reflex angle and the revolution. They used measurements where appropriate, in both estimating and drawing. In addition, from drawings of different views of 3D objects, students have been developing their abilities to build models and draw other views of it.

In Human Society and Its Environment (HSIE) this term, the students have been developing their understanding of the negative effects humans can have on our environments. This links to our English unit this term. The students have identified the different types of Australian environments and the life forms that they support. They have also researched a specific environment to examine the effects that humans are having. They will identify and research environmental issues, such as the Greenhouse Effect, which are having a negative effect on the environment. They will also identify a number of organisations committed to saving the environment and will find out how they operate.
This term, in Creative Arts, the students have been exploring colour and its use in many artworks. They are learning to appreciate that colour can change the mood of an artwork. The students have explored the artworks of Piet Mondrian, Paul Klee and Edvard Munch so far, and explored how each of these artists used colour in their artwork. They will also reflect on each artists’ work and consider how they can use colour in their artworks by exploring how it is used to create moods and designs.
In Personal Development and Health (PDH) this term, the students have been developing their awareness of the accidents that can occur around the home, and ways they are able to prevent these from happening. It is designed to help them develop the skills they may need in dealing with such an accident or emergency situation. More specifically, the students will analyse the causes and treatments for accidents including those such as poisoning, burns, bites and stings, choking and fires.
In Physical Education (PE), the students have been extending their understanding of the game of cricket and working on the skills used in the game. Each lesson has focused on a skill used in cricket, such as throwing and catching, fielding, batting and bowling. The students have also been participating in a number of different types of cricket games, such as French Cricket, Continuous Cricket and other modified versions of cricket. They also participated in SwimSafe to develop their swimming abilities. This week, the students will also participate in the Cross Country event at school.
The term has flown by for Years Five and Six. As it is nearing the end of the term, we would like to take this opportunity to wish you, your families, and loved ones, a happy, healthy, and Holy Easter.
