REC Reflections

1.jpg

As part of their RE/History studies this term, the K/1/2 class will be making (and eating) pancakes next Tuesday, which is Shrove Tuesday.

Shrove Tuesday is the day before Lent starts on Ash Wednesday. The name Shrove comes from the old middle English word 'Shriven' meaning to go to confession to say sorry for the wrong things you've done. Lent always starts on a Wednesday, so Christians went to confession the day before. This became known as Shriven Tuesday and then Shrove Tuesday.

The other name for this day, Pancake Day, comes from the old English custom of using up all the fattening ingredients in the house before Lent, so that people were ready to fast during Lent. The fattening ingredients that most people had in their houses in those days were eggs and milk. A very simple recipe to use up these ingredients was to combine them with some flour and make pancakes!

Just a reminder that next Wednesday is not only Ash Wednesday, it is also our school’s opening mass for 2021. We hope that you will be able to join us at 10 am at St Joseph’s Church to share in this special celebration. Kinder parents and families with children who are new to our school in 2021 are especially welcomed, along with the parents of the students who are receiving badges as part of the 2021 student school leadership team. This includes school captains, members of the Student Representative Council and sport house captains. If you are not able to attend, please try to encourage another family member to be there to pin your child’s badge on.

A Reflection as Lent approaches…

It is customary, Lord
to give something up
during the season of Lent.
What would you have me do without?
I who have so much.
Chocolate?
Chips?
Cheese?
Coffee?
The list is endless
and I could give up all those things
for the span of 40 days
quite easily and almost painlessly.
But what difference would it make
other than making me feel 'holier'
that my friend who makes no such sacrifice?

What would you have me do without?
I who have so much
Selfishness?
Impatience?
Envy?
Pride?
I fear before I ask,
that the answer might be 'yes'
and the giving up
would be all too real, Lord.
It would be difficult,
painful,
sacrificial,
a real cross to carry for 40 days,
and more…
