Class Happenings

Classroom News

Wow! It is already Week 9! How the term has flown. In our 2/3/4 class we have been busy learning about the world in many different ways.
The Year 3 and 4 students learned about the importance of listening to instructions in order to fully participate in tasks.
Year 3 and 4 students also learned the importance of perseverance in order to complete a challenging task.
Finally, Year 3 and 4 students learned different ways to interact with others that we would not normally mix with.

While we were away, the Year 2 students learned how to show responsibility and leadership in everyday tasks as older children were not present to complete required tasks.

Religious Education has focussed on the season of Lent. We have started to look at the Holy Week Story starting with Palm Sunday.

In Science we have designed posters to promote saving water in the home.

NUMERACY
Year 5/6 students have been learning about how to differentiate between area and perimeter. They have also been learning how to use a Cartesian plane by plotting a set of coordinates to create images. The students have really enjoyed this learning.

This week we are moving onto Statistics and Probability. We began with placing a number of chance word cards on a number line. We discussed what else we could place on the line, suggestions were to place fractions, decimals and percentages. This provided a symbolic link to words like “It’s a 50/50 chance”. The link to real life was to discuss how these words related to predicting the weather.

Students created their own number line and added the chance language plus any fractions, decimals and percentages they knew.
Year 2/3/4 were pleased with some new activities this week.

The large floor grid is an activity which is inclusive of all abilities. All 4 operations can be used and the large red squares allow students to make the number sentence using counters or blocks.
The other new activity was making “rows of”. Students rolled die to create how many rows and how many in each row. This shows what multiplication looks like when you make with concrete materials. Once again an inclusive activity as we are able to alter the die to 10 sides and the opportunity to make the array with counters plus recording symbolically.

Kindergarten and Year 1 have really enjoyed their work on patterns. Whilst we look at counting number patterns every day it was pleasing to see students making the connection between patterns and other areas of Mathematics. Students have recognised there are links between patterns and 2 D shapes and colour.
