Class Happenings

NUMERACY
Kindergarten and year 1 students are learning about money. We received great answers about what money is and where it comes from. Students were asked to take careful note of price tags and shopping choices during the next shopping trip.

I brought in some ‘olden days’ money for the students to look at. We compared an old $2 dollar note to the new $2 dollar coin.

I also brought in some Cartwheel Proclamation coins dated 1797; the students were surprised at how heavy they are.

The students loved buying and selling items from their ‘shop’. We looked at a number of ways to make the correct amount to purchase items.

Year 2/3/4 students have been looking at the patterns found on the one hundred chart when we count by different numbers. Students found that when you count by five, starting at three you can see a pattern on the one hundred chart and when we recorded the pairs of numbers, they discovered another pattern. We have also looked at making the larger and smaller numbers from a selection, e.g. what is the largest number you can make using 3,6,8,5. We are also continuing our unit on time. We have played clock patience and we recorded four events from our day and represented the time taken with a strip of ribbon, the students then recorded a start and finish time.

Year 5/6 have been investigating how using poly plugs can help develop a deeper understanding of fractions. In the photos, the poly plugs show an array that is 3 x 5. From this we can discover what fractions are represented, thirds and fifths and fifteenths. This leads nicely into understanding why we multiply the denominators when comparing and adding fractions. Some students are using four poly plugs to investigate larger arrays and other fractions.
