Dear parents and carers,
The children had a great day last Friday dressed in mufti and sporting crazy hair for the gold coin collection for Save the Children. Thank you to the Minnie Vinnies group and many of the other students for their concern for displaced children in many of the world’s conflict zones at present. Mufti Day gave us the opportunity to play our part in supporting these children and their families. Thank you for your kind donations!
Thank you also to Sheridan Hunter and Sally Metcalfe for arranging the delicious Meal Deal. The children thoroughly enjoyed this treat, and it helped make the day fun and memorable.
Athletics Carnival – Friday 31st May
It is just over a week until the St Joseph’s Athletics Carnival which will see children K-6 competing in a wide range of track, field, and novelty events. This event will take place at the Henry Lawson High School and we hope many parents and friends will be available to join us and cheer the children on!
A great day of sport is assured!
(Due to the Athletics carnival, Playgroup will be cancelled and reconvene on Friday 7th June.)
Parents will have received a message via Compass with the program for the day. The students come to school first before moving to the High School for the event with K/1 joining us at 11.30. The children all need their hats, water bottles, snack and lunch, PE Kit including and jacket/jumper for when they cool down between events
Henry Lawson Festival
The main dates to remember are:
Poetry Recitation Thursday 6th June Grenfell Public School
Festival Parade Saturday 8th June Grenfell CBD
Poetry Recitation
Next Thursday, 6th June, the whole school will participate in the Poetry Recitation at Grenfell Public School. Recitation Day aims to foster an awareness of Australian verse among students, as well as give them the opportunity and confidence to perform before an audience and an adjudicator; thus building experience and confidence in public speaking.
Book prizes of Australian literature will be awarded for all sections winners. Highly commended and commended cards will be awarded, and all entrants will receive a card for their participation in the Henry Lawson Festival.
Thank you, parents and carers, for supporting the children in preparing for the poetry recital. To complete their performance, the children are encouraged to dress up for the recital or carry a prop or both. Parents are of course very welcome to come along on the day and hear the children recite their poems.
Henry Lawson Festival Parade
This year's theme is "Up the Country" and staff and students have been busy discussing our Parade entry. We have decided to break up some of the theme of the poem and allocate outfits to the different classes. We hope that all members of the school will participate in the parade which is scheduled for Saturday 8th June.
K/1 will be organising some masks to dress as a herd of sheep to lead our parade entry and 5/6 will find their best drover/swagman inspired outfits to help move the sheep along. 2/3/4 will be discussing the variety of animals mentioned in the poem ranging from reptiles to birds and making masks to match to complete our portion of the procession.
By now, families should have received a letter outlining arrangements for the parade with a slip to return to register whether your child will be participating. Please do return the slip by Monday 3rd June.
If you have any issues or need further information, please contact Mr M through the school number or lachlan.martens@cg.catholic.edu.au.
In Conclusion…
The Athletics Carnival is scheduled for tomorrow, Friday 31st May. Unfortunately, the weather forecast is not encouraging at this point. We are pleased to inform you that Henry Lawson High School has confirmed that we are able to postpone the event to the following Friday 7th June, if required. Should the rain arrive as predicted or if it is forecast on Friday morning, a message will be sent via Compass to inform you that we will have school as usual, and the Carnival will be rescheduled to the following Friday.
For more details of the Carnival, please see the Sport Report later in this newsletter.
With best wishes,
Farewell and Thank you Sister Mary
Next Wednesday 7th June at 10.30 in the Library, we will be honouring Sr Mary who has been such a wonderful support and contributor to the life of St Joseph’s over the last 6 years. Parents and friends who know Sr Mary are warmly invited to join us for a short Liturgy followed by morning tea (we would appreciate it if you can please bring a plate).
How did Sr Mary find herself in Grenfell? In 2018, Sr Mary went looking for a country experience. She and another nun were sent to explore where the Mercy nuns had set up schools, hospitals etc in NSW. Luckily for us, Sr Mary felt that Grenfell was calling her. It reminded her of where she had been on holidays with her family.
After settling in the town and not knowing anyone else, Mary decided to ‘wander with intent’ going to local cafes and shops to meet people and chat. These conversations lead her to being involved and supporting the Grenfell community in so very many and varied ways! And we at St Mary’s are so very grateful for the way Sr Mary has supported our school, the staff, the students and especially her project of introducing us to Catherine McAuley, the Founder of the Sisters of Mercy to our school community.
Reflecting on Compassion
In your quiet space, become present to the moment. Concentrate on your breathing,
welcoming the energy you breathe in and farewelling the tension you breathe out ...
Bring to mind the most compassionate person you know, someone who is at ease with others and can feel their pain. Picture their eyes, notice their hands, recall their facial
expressions, listen to their voice.
▶ What does compassion look, feel and sound like?
At times, we can be our own fiercest critics, placing impossible burdens on ourselves.
▶ Are there any aspects of your life calling out to you to be compassionate to yourself? Notice if anything comes to the surface and be grateful for this gift of awareness.
▶ Hear yourself speak with compassion about this aspect of your life.
It's Term 2 so, as many of you may know, the Henry Lawson Festival is fast approaching and with that comes our preparations.
The students are well underway with preparing for the poetry recitation on Thursday 6th June at the Grenfell Public School.
This year's theme is "Up the Country" and students have read or listened to the poem by Henry Lawson to find inspiration to create their art works. Our artworks will be finished by Thursday 23rd May and, after judging, will be on display from Monday, 3rd June - Tuesday, 11th June.
Staff have also been busy discussing our Parade entry, also around the theme "Up the Country".
Mr Martens has also contacted to members of our school community to include some drovers on horseback.
If you have any issues or need further information, please contact Mr M through the school number or lachlan.martens@cg.catholic.edu.au.
Everyone deserves a safe place to call home. That’s why Vinnies is raising money to provide people experiencing homelessness and disadvantage with vital access to food and accommodation. Vinnies also provide education, counselling, employment and health services to help break the cycle of poverty in the long term.
Let's band together & help them get through the cold winter comfortably.
Lunch Order Menu Tuesday & Thursday
We would like to thank the parents and friends who make the St Joseph’s Breakfast Club possible on Tuesdays and Thursdays each week. As the cooler weather is upon us, something warm in the children’s tunnies when they arrive at school will be greatly appreciated. Thank you to everyone who makes this happen! Special Thanks to the Grenfell Foodhall for their support!
If you are unable to attend your rostered day please reach out to another family to swap day.
