Dear Parents and Carers,
Recognition for Mrs King
On Thursday 8th August, Catholic Education Canberra Goulburn celebrated the Faith in Learning, Catholic Education, Excellence Awards. The theme of the awards was ‘living our charism’.
We had the opportunity to recognise people across our Archdiocese, both employees and volunteers, who are using their God-given gifts to enrich the lives of the staff, students and families in our school communities.
The Primary Teacher Award recipient was Leslie King. Leslie has contributed 28 years of continuous service to St Joseph’s Primary School and St Joseph’s Parish in Grenfell. Over her career, Leslie has taken on a variety of roles, including librarian, child safety advocate, choir leader, Acting Principal and Religious Education Coordinator. She has consistently supported the growth, learning and faith development of generations of children from Grenfell.
I would like to personally congratulate Leslie on receiving this award and thank her for her dedication and commitment to our school community.
Tell Them From Me Survey
Every year Catholic Education conducts a survey regarding the performance of our school. Staff, parents and students (Yr 4-6) are surveyed regarding feedback on Catholic identity, teaching and learning, school operations and student wellbeing.
Parents have received a link to this important survey via Compass. If you did not receive the link please let our front office know asap.
Results of the survey are important to us and all parents are encouraged to participate. The survey closes tomorrow so this is your last chance.
School Attendance
There is nothing more important for the children’s wellbeing and progress at school than regular attendance. We can’t remind parents enough, of the importance of punctuality and regular school attendance of every student, every day! There is no safe number of days for missing school. If a student misses as little as four days each term they will have missed over a year of learning, by the end of their schooling.
Schools in the Archdiocese of Canberra & Goulburn work in partnership with parents/carers to encourage and support regular attendance of children and young people at school. Education in NSW and the ACT is compulsory for all children between the ages of six years and below the minimum school leaving age.
Arriving at school and class on time:
- ensures that students do not miss out on important learning activities scheduled early in the day;
- helps students learn the importance of punctuality and routine;
- gives students time to greet their friends before class; and
- reduces classroom disruption.
Lateness is recorded as a partial absence and must be explained by parents/carers. If a child is late for school by just 10 minutes per day, they will miss nearly 6 months of schooling over 13 years. If your child arrives at school after 9am, they must be signed in by a parent or guardian. If your child is experiencing challenges of attending school, we are here to help!

World Humanitarian Day
Monday (August 19) marked World Humanitarian Day, which aims to promote the well-being, dignity and ultimately the survival of those affected by disasters, and the safety and security of the aid workers who rush to help them. These people work in disaster and conflict zones to protect and save people in need, often by providing basic necessities like food. Globally, humanitarian needs are at record levels.
Like other international days and weeks, World Humanitarian Day is used to raise awareness and educate the public on global challenges and issues.
The UN's theme for this year's World Humanitarian Day is #NoMatterWhat. This reflects those who work in the field's commitment to serving and protecting communities in need.

God of unity,
We ask you to bless the humanitarians who serve others in war zones, among inadequate living conditions, under governments unaware of destructive infrastructures, and even in their own communities. Bring aid to every corner of the earth so that all your children may find themselves able to live full lives; lives that walk with each other as sisters and brothers united with a common humanity. We ask all these things in your name.
Amen
Grandparent’s Day
It was wonderful to see so many grandparents at St Joseph’s last Friday for Grandparents Day!
A special thanks to our Year 6 students for leading the beautiful Liturgy to commence the proceedings. The Kindergarten and Year 1 children also took a moment to shine in their performance for the grandparents.
The Liturgy was an important time to reflect on the important role grandparents play in our lives and to give thanks for all that they do.
A delectable variety of slices, cakes and treats were enjoyed for morning tea. Thanks to Sally and Sheridan for organising this!
A special thanks to all of our grandparents for spending time with us this morning and for everything you do to enrich the lives of your grandchildren!
Book Week
‘Reading is Magic’ is the theme of this year’s Children’s Book Week, which encourages children to embrace the magic of reading and explore the possibilities that lie within the pages of a book.
Yesterday, students and staff dressed up as a book character to foster a love of reading and creativity. There were some fantastic costumes, well done! We would also like to thank our friends from Grenfell Preschool and Long Daycare for coming and joining in the fun!
