Dear parents and carers,
We have had another busy week, with the children continuing to work across a range of activities. The cold weather is with us again and as such we ask that the children come prepared for cold days, it was concerning to see many of the children without a jumper earlier this week.
Thank you to those families who are ensuring that children who are unwell, are taking time to recover before returning to school. We are continuing with the current advice that children who have runny noses, coughs, cold or flu like symptoms will be sent home from school and we ask that they stay at home until the symptoms have cleared.
We have received advice from Catholic Education that the format of our reports for Semester 1 will be different to previous reports. In addition, we will be assessing the areas of English, Mathematics and Religion. The other key learning areas will be assessed in Semester Two.
We will be holding our Parent Teacher conferences during Week 8. Please fill in the attached form to nominate meeting times with your child’s teacher.
It is important that you attend these meetings as these are a great opportunity for you to provide feedback about your experiences of remote learning and how your child coped during the period of learning from home. It is also an opportunity for you to learn some more about the changes to the report format for this semester.
At present we are not able to use THLHS’s field event spaces due to the continuing restrictions resulting from the covid pandemic. We have set up a discus cage and shot-put space at school so that we can work on these field events. Thanks to Aize for helping to set up our temporary discus cage.
The update of our behaviour plan is a work in progress. In terms of our behaviour management, we are focusing on how we can be considerate of others and their feelings. This can include taking turns, positive encouragement, opening a door for someone, offering to carry equipment, taking care of the equipment that we do have or even remembering to say please and thank you. All these actions are easy courtesies that are gratefully received.
To this end we have also been talking about the way that when things go wrong, children often use the thinking that “I was only joking...” as a means of justifying their behaviour or choice of words. This is not acceptable, as when used, this phrase misses the point that someone else has been hurt because of the behaviour/comments.
Please continue having conversations with your children around the things that they can be doing both at home and at school that show an understanding of being considerate of others.
School Garden - Thank you to Jack R, Stella, Camilla M and Indy for your efforts to plant some lawn runners outside the Yr. 5/6 classroom, so far, they are looking great.
Thank you to Camilla G, Emily and Adelaide for planning more carrots in the garden box near the canteen. These are growing from seed and we are looking forward to enjoying them later in the year.
Kinder 2021 – many families are already beginning to plan for 2021. If your family has a younger sibling at home who will start school in 2021, please collect an enrolment form from the office to complete and return in preparation for next year.
If you know of a family who would like more information about St Joseph’s, please invite them to contact us at school.
Thank you to those families who have already returned enrolment forms in preparation for 2021.
Book Club – flyers were sent home this week, please finalise your orders by Friday, 19 June 2020.
Take care and stay safe,
Dadirri, an Aboriginal concept, can be defined as, “deep inner listening or tuning in to deeply understand the beauty of nature.” The students in Year 2/3/4 have had the opportunity to experience Dadirri as part of their Religious Education program this term. The students were asked to find a space and then they were invited to be still and listen. They were encouraged to let something find them, such as a leaf, the wind, a bird calling, an ant walking by or the colours of the sky. The students were then asked to reflect on their experience using their prayer journals. Some of their journal entries have been included here.
Thank to everyone for sharing your work this week, our classrooms have been looking very different in a great way, everyone is working hard – thank you to everyone for your creative efforts with completing your learning this week.
Here are just a few samples of what we have been seeing around our school this week.
Did you know that wedgetail eagles can fly as high as 2000m in the air?
Did you know that in New Zealand there are more sheep then people?
